Maria Assunção Flores

Maria Assunção Flores works at the University of Minho, Portugal. Her research interests include teacher professionalism and identity, teacher education and professional development, curriculum and assessment. She has published extensively on these topics both nationally and internationally. She served as Chair of the International Study Association on Teachers and Teaching (ISATT) between 2013 and 2019. She is currently co-editor of the European Journal of Teacher Education and Director of the Research Centre on Child Studies at the University of Minho.

Teacher Professional Development: Why Does It Matter?

In this talk I look at the main purposes, strategies and outcomes of teacher professional development drawing on the notions of teacher professionalism and professional capital. A more expansive and dynamic view of teacher professional development is advocated in order to move beyond a deficit and “what works” approach and to consider more inclusive and participatory perspectives.
